오늘의 단어 : Subtle (+Put)

Chris와의 아이토키 시간에 배운 단어 'Subtle'에 대한 유튜브 강의를 보고 기록해 본다. 40만 유튜버 구슬쌤의 강의인데, 설명도 알차고 예문도 각종 영화와 드라마 장면으로 보여줘서 참 유익한 듯:)

1. Subtle : 미묘한, 감지하기 힘든, 섬세한

 

  1) Is the change too obvious? No, it's very subtle.

  2) Did you catch the subtle sucking up? -> 티 안나게 살짝 아부떠는거 눈치 챘어?

  3) Subtle difference. Did you catch that?

  4) Is this your subtle way of saying that I'm out of shape?

  5) I have some news. There's no subtle way to put this. -> 섬세하게 돌려 말할 방법이 없다.

  6) I was just trying to be subtle, and that's not my thing.

 

2. Put : 특정한 방식으로 표현/설명하다.

 

  1) It's very well put. -> 잘 표현했네. 잘 설명했네.

  2) That's correct. Well put. 

  3) Simply put / To put it simply -> 간단히 말해서, 단순히 말하면

  4) Simply put, the customers are satisfied.

  5) That's one way to put it. -> 그렇게 보실 수도 있겠네요.

  6) Jan, is there anything you'd like to contribute?

      Well, I can't put it any better than Ted did.

      ** Contribute : (이 상황에 기여하듯) 회의나 대화에서 의견을 말하다, 조언/의견/지식 등을 제공하다.

  7) I can't think of a better way to put this, -> 더 잘 표현/설명할 방법이 딱히 생각나지 않을 때.

      but it definitely has room for improvement.

  8) There's not really an easy way to put this.

 

3. One's thing : 취향/관심사/잘하는 것

  1) That's my thing. = That's my cup of tea.

  2) This sort of artwork isn't everyone's cup of tea.

  3) That's your thing. = That's your area of expertise. -> 전문분야

  4) So this is where we need your expertise.

  5) That's your specialty.

 

4. expertise

  1) I could really use your expertise. (could use : to need or want something, ~만 있으면 딱 좋겠어)

  2) I could definitely use your brainpower.

 

**I couldn't ask for more. 지금 이대로도 정말 만족해/ 행복해/ 좋아.
